PetSafe ScoopFree Smart Review

The ScoopFree is the cheapest way to stop scooping, and the most expensive way to own a litter box.

Updated 2026-09-02

Verdict

The ScoopFree is the cheapest way to stop scooping, and the most expensive way to own a litter box. The rake mechanism is simple and hard to break, the low profile fits where a globe never will, and the app is adequate. But the disposable crystal trays run roughly $220 a year, which means it costs more than a Litter-Robot over four years while doing less.

Pros

  • Lowest purchase price of any powered box here
  • Very low 5.5 in entry and flat profile
  • Simple rake mechanism with little to fail
  • Sold in mainstream retail with easy returns

Cons

  • Proprietary crystal trays at roughly $220 a year
  • No clumping litter support at all
  • Single-cat only in practice
  • Costs more than a premium box over four years

Best for

  • One small cat
  • Low-ceiling or narrow spaces
  • Buyers who want the lowest sticker price

Not ideal for

  • Multi-cat homes
  • Anyone calculating cost per year
  • Clumping litter users

Scores

Six categories, weighted toward the two that people actually buy these for. See the method.

  • Cleaning 7.2

How completely and reliably it clears waste on every cycle.

  • Odor control 7.4

Seal quality, filtration, and how the room smells after a week.

  • Safety 7.6

Sensor coverage, pinch protection, and behaviour when a cat re-enters.

  • App 6.9

Setup, connection reliability, and whether the data is actually useful.

  • Maintenance 7.8

How long a full clean takes and how well the unit comes apart.

  • Value 6.6

Cleaning

The rake pushes solids into a covered compartment rather than sifting. It works, but it smears more than a globe does, and it cannot handle clumping litter at all.

Odor control

Crystal litter absorbs urine well for the first week and then noticeably less well. The covered tray helps. It is acceptable for one cat and falls apart with two.

Safety

Infrared entry detection and a rake obstruction reverse. Two layers, no weight sensing. The rake is slow and low-force, which limits the risk, but this is the thinnest safety specification of any powered box here.

Noise

Around 40 dB — the rake is brief and quiet, and there is no drum to rotate. On paper the quietest powered option here.

Setup

The fastest here at under ten minutes — slide in a crystal tray, plug it in, pair the app. There is nothing to assemble.

App

Basic. Cycle history, a rake-now button and low-tray alerts. No weight data at all, which means no health signal, and that is a real gap in 2026.

Consumables

Proprietary disposable crystal trays at roughly $220 a year. This is the single most expensive consumable in this index and it is mandatory.

Long-term cost

The cheapest box to buy and the most expensive to own. It passes the Litter-Robot 4 on total cost somewhere in year four while doing considerably less. If you intend to keep it more than two years, buy something else.
